This review is from: Chocolate Lenin: A Novel (Paperback)
It's very hard to categorize this book, which is part of its ridiculous charm.
If you know all about the historical figure Lenin and his relationship to Stalin, and at least some of how Russia came to be what it is today, and if you take all that reality-history seriously, this book could well keep you in stitches all night.
This is a novel that requires the reader to have some depth of context to understand and appreciate how it's a take-off on our current reality. If you've never heard of Lenin, this just isn't going to get to you the same way.
We argue and even rage over political matters, but make no progress. That may well be because we just can't laugh at ourselves hard enough to gain perspective. This novel might restore perspective and let some progress be made.
Chocolate Lenin postulates a "what-if" of the typical science fiction novel - what if someone cloned Lenin? What if the clone woke up and started walking around, being spotted, reported....
What if those who funded the project had their delusions of power-grabbing thwarted by a scientist who taunted them by stealing all the research data and scattering it to the winds, creating a puzzle it would take a super-genius to solve?
I can just imagine how much fun Graham Diamond had writing this book!

Finding an enjoyable book to read is never difficult for me. When I came across Chocolate Lenin in my local bookstore I did a double take. The title caught my eye. I had heard of the author but could not recall having read any of his books. On a whim I bought it.
The book kept me up for a number of late nights, often laughing my head off. You don't have to be a student of history to understand what Graham Diamond has done with his tale. It is a thought provoking stare at our mad world of today. It's all there, our technology advancing so fast that everything has changed by the time you wake up in the morning. Our absurd political correctness, endless advertising, and our embarrassing gloating over our so-called achievements.
In our world of oil quests, gold hoarding, and stock market crashes and booms, this book reduces the modern world to bare nakedness. Indeed the Emperor has no clothes!
Chocolate Lenin is a sheer delight. Read it and decide for yourself.

Graham Diamond has created a brilliant premise for his novel, CHOCOLATE LENIN. A sinister plot by an insane scientist in Russia has recreated the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin and restored him to life. Havoc ensues. A band of government appointed specialists, somewhat odd themselves, set out to stop him before disaster strikes not only Russia but the world.
The characters are well-drawn, the plot excels to the point of hilarity. I have read that the book is already being called an instant cult classic. I agree with that assessment. It is a broad satire hard to pinpoint into any single genre. Once you have read this you will never quite look at contemporary politics the same.
This story is as inventive and original as one can be. I highly recommend this novel to all readers who enjoy wit, and broad humor.
