Just Maine Folks   (2012-01-23)

Review of `Just Maine Folks' by the Maine Writers Research Club, self -published in 1924 in Lewiston, Maine.
Reviewer: Dr W. P. Palmer
This book is a strange compilation, which was useful for my research into the life and work of Jacob Abbott, a nineteenth century children's book author with a strong interest in science.
More than forty authors were involved in writing this book. The articles about those famous or interesting people born in Maine and are generally five to fifteen pages in length of variable quality. Amongst the stories which are included in this book are the stories of Robert Edwin Peary, the Arctic explorer, Hiram Maxim, the inventor of the maxim gun, Artemus Ward the comic writer, Jacob Abbott, the children's author, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the poet, who was once a student of Jacob Abbott.
The cover design of the book is simple but effective and the book is well illustrated. It is not a book to read from cover to cover but is recommended as a book to dip into to learn more about some Maine residents of yesteryear. Some details of the articles to which reference was made are below:
ROBERT EDWIN PEARY Orrie Quimby Dearborn 49 -65 HIRAM MAXIM AND HIS GUN Maria M. Irish 136-139 ARTEMUS WARD Don C. Seitz 213-223 JACOB ABBOTT Jennie Lawrence Pratt 239-248 HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW Ella Matthews Bangs 306-314
