I learned a lot about film making and movies after reading this book, The Making of Dual Mania. After watching several independent movies I had noticed how different they were from big blockbuster movies and I wondered why. Well, now I know. Aside from the obvious facts like big budgets and big name actors, independent movies tackled subjects quite differently than studio fare and how indie filmmakers tell their own stories ( even taboo issues involving race, interracial sex, madness, etc.) that studios normally won't dare touch. The author (Joseph Strickland who also wrote, produced and directed the movie Dual Mania) does a good job in showing the many challenges he and his film team faced as they tackled their first movie: casting unknown actors, raising funds, location scouting, obtaining an experienced film crew and shooting in a big city like Chicago. Included is a great screenplay and graphic storyboards as well as behind the scenes photos were a plus. Funny, educational and revealing, The Making of Dual Mania was a good read. Nice.

I like film books because sometimes I may learn something that the filmmakers weren't able to talk about during their interviews,etc.. But I came across this book, the Making Of Dual Mania and read it and I discovered that it can be sometimes rough making movies. Especially in the indie cinema. The author, Joseph Strickland produced as well as directed and wrote the original script battled many obstacles in his pursue to film his first feature film, Dual Mania,a psychological thriller set in Chicago. At times harrowing but very educational, this book reveals the actual guts, will power and stamina it takes to make a movie outside the mainstream film system. Dark humor and tough as nails attitude are many of the skills needed to create original movies. I liked the interview chapter featuring the writer/director as well the casting director. At the end is a copy of the actual screenplay and some storyboard drawings. Very cool.

And boy, it did not disappoint me! I enjoyed reading the entire movie screenplay, and learning about what it REALLY takes to make an independent movie. And I must say, I learned it takes a lot more than I ever could have imagined. I liked the interviews with the director (Joseph Strickland) and the casting director (Cat Ellington) too, because of the insights they shared on how to make a real movie. Highly enjoyable!
