One of the greatest Norwegian novels. The title means “Bread of the Night”. Four volumes translated into Danish, Swedish, German and Dutch. The events happen in the 17th century when Norway was de facto a Danish colony. Two German experts come to a place and construct a cobber mine. The peasants abandon their fields, being promised riches by driving ore to the mine. Every car will give them a mark on a staff, which will entitle them to an amount of money, but it is doubtful if they ever get this money. Among all adult ore driving males 15-year-old girl An-Magritt is as hyper-aggressive and raw as the others. The young German Johannes perceives her as a pagan goddess . Throughout all four volumes a fine love story develops and the girl begins to have a soul, as the writer formulates it. The style of the novel is expressionistic. The content is extremely realistic. Nevertheless Falkberget is an incurable romanticist.
