<a name="_Toc500316917"></a><a name="_Toc505685819">“A book the publishers believe will be a big seller. There is a considerable mystery about the identity of Evelyn May. She is, however, a young, a very young, child of an American father and English mother with a precocious acuteness of mind that reacts to the impressions of others without forming definite ones of its own. To an Adult friend she handed her Log with the request, "Keep it from mamma and daddy; keep it for my grandchildren."</a>
<a name="_Toc500316918"></a><a name="_Toc505685820">But the Adult Friend, after eliminating phrases, sentences, and even paragraphs that troubled her Victorian modesty, and which might be misconstrued by a public unprepared to grant indulgence to Evelyn May's youth and innocence, passed the Log on for publication.</a>”
<a name="_Toc500316919"></a><a name="_Toc505685821">Credit for locating the author of this book should go to Mrs. Clara Jane Mancuso of Newark Delaware, circ. 1989, who in turn advised Claudio Murri of the existence of this book —and its real author. Claudio Murri could not cite this fact in his theses on the author —he could not verify that status. 4 December 2017, Mr. Murri forwarded the information. It took but minutes, using the internet, to locate</a> the Catalog of Copyright Entries. New Series: 1929, Part 1, which confirms that W. Lacey Amy is indeed ‘Evelyn May’!
Characters include Mrs. Brooks Torrance (mamma), John Brooks Terrance, (daddy) and Miss Evelyn May Torrance.
“And mamma said sh-not-before-Evelyn-May.” Means ‘not in front of . . .’
Quote: “...people would see through the Leag of Nations and where would they find jobs for the Surplus Politishuns and Labour people they keep in Geneva now. Mamma says America is Lucky because she has her Senate.”
This book is a fictional morality and political commentary on the times. Because it speaks about 1927 era, the people, the politics and morality of a time through the lens of an infant. It does not read well in 2020.
The real author Lacey Amy, was a journalist; so it is only professional that he could not have his name associated with the contents at the time of publication. /drf
